- Volumes 1 to 3: On the way of studying natural history followed by the Theory of the Earth, General History of Animals and Natural History of Man (1749) - 1 plate and 2 maps;
- Volumes 4 to 15: twelve volumes on quadrupeds (from 1753 to 1767) - 549 plates (23+52+57+48+54+40+57+43+57+59+41+18) ;
- Volumes 16 to 24: nine volumes on birds (from 1770 to 1783) - 262 plates (29+27+31+27+22+25+31+39+31) ;

First printing of the 812 very beautiful plates engraved by Jacques de Sève + 2 maps in the first volume.

The representation of animals is always done with great aesthetic and anatomical concern, in picturesque or mythological settings.

Contemporary bindings in full marbled calfskin, decorated spines, mosaic pieces in red morocco specifying the title and volume number. The royal arms initially struck on the upper covers were covered with gilded irons with fleuron motifs to erase them. The same goes for the backs covered with pieces of leather glued over the old boxes. Casters on the cuts. Speckled slices.

Condition: Beautiful copy, the bindings present well despite the modifications undergone to erase any sign of royalty. Tears on some headdresses. Usual friction. Very fresh interiors, white paper and no foxing. Some title pages have been clumsily colored. Very clean boards. Ex-libris label laminated to the titles.

Provenance: from the library of Alb. Renaud d'Avène, Marquis des Méloizes (heraldic ex-libris)

One of the most ambitious and comprehensive works in scientific literature. Begun by Buffon (1707-1789) , the Natural History was composed with the collaboration of Daubenton, Guéneau de Montbéliard and Abbé Bexon, and finished by Bernard-Germain de Lacépède.
