Building the Levy Banks Against the Enemy. 1967.
"Air strikes failed to bring the North to a standstill. Thousands of laborers were constantly repairing roads, bridges, water reserves, and railways as fast as they were damaged to enable supplies and support the war effort. This bold work shows a strong and resilient figure, cartoon-like in proportion. His gun is fastened across his body and he holds a container of dirt to help rebuild the levy banks destroyed by the U.S. bombing. The underlying message is no matter how simple or small the contribution, everyone can help with the war effort" (Deborah Salter).
