LOT 0023

Burgoyne Diller (1906-1965) Geometric Drawing

[ translate ]

Graphite and colored pencil drawing on tracing paper, untitled abstract, signed* with the artist's initial and dated (Burgoyne Diller, 1906-1965). 24 x 18 7/8 inches. Very good condition overall, some slight even toning to the tracing paper, and a few smudges and pencil smears here and there, but otherwise very good. Sold unframed.

Lot Note: It has been suggested that this work may have been created as a study for a series of wall constructions.

Condition Note: The present lot is currently lightly affixed to a piece of contemporary mat board but can easily be removed for framing or shipping.

Provenance: Acquired by the consignor's family from Joseph Hoffman, NYC, circa 1970's. We are told that Mr. Hoffman was a private bookseller and part-time art dealer. The present lot was acquired in a book trade together with several other drawings and appears never to have been framed. It was rolled in a tube when acquired and was never framed by the consignor's family.

*Preston Hall Gallery has not had this lot examined by an expert to determine its authenticity. The lot description and the lot title are for identification purposes only and do not constitute an attribution. Preston Hall Gallery is not an authority on works by this artist. The style, subject matter, and signature seem correct in our opinion although our assessment may not be accurate. Some works sold by Preston Hall Gallery have subsequently been authenticated and resold by major auction houses worldwide; however, we cannot guarantee the same outcome for the present lot. There are risks associated with buying unauthenticated works of art. The value and marketability of this work could be positively or negatively affected by an expert's examination and opinion. Such opinions can vary, and some opinions may not be favorable. An expert or panel of experts could judge the work to be "in the style" of (but not by) the named artist, an "afterwork" (a copy), or a counterfeit (a forgery). No additional information regarding this lot's provenance is available nor will any be provided after the sale.
