Bust of Charles Sumner.
Martin Milmore.
Bust of Charles Sumner.
[Boston], 1864
Parian ware porcelain, 11½ inches tall, 5½ x 6 inches at base, captioned "Sumner" on the base, with signature "M. Milmore 1864" in the mold on the base at rear; clean, professionally restored.
Martin Milmore (1844-1883) was an Irish-American sculptor in Boston, best known for his bust of Abraham Lincoln. He created at least two other busts of Sumner, one of which graces the Massachusetts State House. We find no other examples of this one, but it may be the one modelled by Milmore for the November 1864 National Soldiers' Fair in Boston. The Boston Evening Transcript's coverage of the fair on 16 and 17 November 1864 included a notice that "M. Milmore, the distinguished young Artist, has generously contributed to the Teachers' Table, two Busts, one of the Honorable Charles Sumner, and the other of Professor H.W. Longfellow."
