Butterfield" type pocket sundial in silver with octagonal plate engraved with time scales (Roman and Arabic intercalated) for latitudes 40°, 45°, 50° and 55°, with folding gnomon and bird style, built-in compass with fleur-de-lys decoration. Engraved on the back of the latitudes of the major European cities.
Signed "N. BION in Paris" 7.3 x 6.5 cm.
In its black chagrin case, lined with green velvet.

Nicolas BION (1652- 1733) French engineer and cosmographer, he was the engineer of LOUIS XIV for mathematical instruments. He opened a workshop in 1681 at the "Quart de cercle", quai de l'Horloge in Paris. One of his sons, Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas
, also became the King's engineer and took over his father's workshop in 1731.
