A very alluring and serene medium-sized four-panel byôbu 屏風 (room divider) with a refined continuous Nanga-school 南画 painting of a lively landscape filled with different trees, flowers and birds near a river. The painting has many different scenes that catches your eye. To the right a weeping willow 柳 (yanagi) with a pair of birds in its branches. Underneath a pheasant next to a blooming red camellia 椿 (tsubaki) looking at the wild river. On the horizon a faint mountain ridge is visible, with on the left a waterfall. This multi-coloured painting is set on paper background and is beautifully accentuated on several places by golden details. Like the water drops of the crashing waterfall, or clouds behind the trees. The panels are surrounded by two silk borders, a thin black one with a bird and bamboo motive, and a wide gold one with a leaf and ornament motive. The screen is protected by a dark red lacquer wooden frame with its original hardware (some parts missing) . Considering the age, which is approximately 150-220 years old, the byôbu is in a very good condition. There are only some signs of age and wear. Please see the photos for a condition reference. This room divider is very light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. It is rare to find a medium-sized room divider made up of four panels. This makes the screen an ideal size for western interiors. Total width: 247. 4 cm (2 x 63. 1 cm and 2 x 60. 6 cm) ; Height: 152. 8 cm. Nanga (南画, "Southern painting") , also known as Bunjinga (文人画, "literati painting") , was a school of Japanese painting which flourished in the late Edo period among artists who considered themselves literati, or intellectuals. While each of these artists was, almost by definition, unique and independent, they all shared an admiration for traditional Chinese culture. Their paintings, usually in monochrome black ink, sometimes with light color, and nearly always depicting Chinese landscapes or similar subjects, were patterned after Chinese literati painting, called wenrenhua (文人画) in Chinese.
