Byobu, Folding screen - Silk, Wood - Bamboo - Yukimatsu Shunpo 幸松春浦(1897-1962) - Elegant 4-panel screen with a bamboo and a white-eye bird design, signed by a price winning artist. - Japan - Taishō period (1912-1926)

Medium-sized beautiful four panel byobu-screen with a serene multi-coloured painting of a bamboo garden on a silk background with a warm golden colour. Between the stalks of fresh bamboo a single Japanese White-eye bird 目白(Mejiro) finds its sanctuary. Signed ‘Shunpo’ and sealed by the artist Yukimatsu Shunpo 幸松春浦 (1897-1962) . The screen dates from the early 20th century. The silk screen set in a black lacquered wooden frame (without metal hardware) . It has been completely restored to original condition (without over-painting) and is in excellent condition. A nice feat, seen as this screen is considering the age of about 100 years. Total width: 213. 2 cm (4 x 53. 3 cm) ; Height: 152. 4 cm. Yukimatsu Shunpo (1897-1962) was born in Oita and studied initially under Sakuma Chikuho before moving to Osaka to study under Himejima Chikugai. He exhibited with the Teiten (future Nitten) many times and received the Tokusen prize there in 1926 and 1927. The National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo holds work by the artist, as well as the Oita Art Museum which has more than a dozen paintings. These kind of room-dividers are light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
