Byobu, Folding screen - goldleaf, paint and Gofun - 6 panel gold-leaf screen with a rare painting of a river landscape with a drum and festival curtain - Japan - Late Edo period

A six-panel screen, depicting a large variety of chrysanthemums and asters in a river landscape, and depicting a drum used for a Bugaku dance. Bugaku is a traditional Japanese court dance that has been performed to select elites mostly in Japanese imperial courts for over twelve hundred years. The dancers wear intricate traditional Buddhist costumes, which usually include equally beautiful masks. The drum is decorated with two curling dragons and is placed behind a festival or gathering curtain. The chrysanthemums, executed in Gofun paste and in moriage relief. Ink, colors and gofun on paper with a pattern of gold leaf squares. The front sides with a few spots and small losses to the paper, the back sides a bit damaged. But overal in nice original condition with signs of age and use. With all original hardware to protect the corners. These kind of room-dividers are light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. Total width: 372 cm; (6 x 62. 5 cm) , Height: 172 cm.
