An impressive large 6-panel byôbu (room divider) with a painting of a broad view of ‘The top of the Southern Alps’ 南アルプス山嶺 (Minami Arupusu Sanrei) during winter. Please note that this screen is part of a set, the other room divider is also up for auction this week. In a similar style but of a turbulent sea at the cape Shimokita Peninsula 下北半島 (Shimokita-hantō) . An imposing view of a mountain range with many peaks that are visible from various places behind different ridges. A lot op depth is created in the work by a complex interplay of lines with a great contrast between light and dark. In the distance, the peaks are light and appear to be covered in snow. While the closest mountain is much more heavily inked, making it appear to be covered with a sea of trees. To emphasize the breadth of the perspective even more, in the foreground only a few treetops are visible. Different types of treetops, even a decayed one, painted in jet black ink. Winter is approaching as the deciduous trees have mostly lost their leaves, while the pine trees are still well protected with a full pack of leaves. This modern room divider is entirely done in black and white, giving it more strength. Between the screens, the panels are covered with gold paper, which provides a nice contrast when placed at an angle. In the lower left corner, the piece bears a title, date, signature and seal. It is titled ‘The top of the Southern Alps’ 南アルプス山嶺 (Minami Arupusu Sanrei) , and dated the 5th month of 1981 昭和五十六年五月 (Shôwa gojûrokunen gogatsu) . Signed Kadô 賀堂, and sealed […] dô […] 堂. The byôbu is in a very good condition, with little to no traces of wear. Please see the photos for reference. This room divider is light in weight and can also be easily mounted flat on a wall and presented as one piece of art. Total width: 368. 8 cm ( 2 x 63. 0 cm and 4 x 60. 7 cm) , Height: 171. 2 cm When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
