Byōbu folding screen - Gold leaf, Lacquer, Wood, Paper - Japan - Late Edo period (First half 19th century)

Alluring, large six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) with a detailed genre painting depicting a lively cityscape framed by an impressive temple complex.

The artwork offers a glimpse into various facets of daily life during the Edo period. Numerous individuals are depicted engaging in different activities:
crowds gathering at a vast temple housing an immense Buddha, possibly the renowned Todaiji ("Great Eastern Temple") , its colossal head visible through an open window;
samurai 侍 (noblemen) leisurely strolling beside a lake on the inside of a palace;
people enjoying picnics on low platforms near tranquil rivers, and much more.

The scenes are surrounded by distinctive silver- gold leaf clouds with a relief design of circles. The polychrome painting is set on a dark gold leaf background, and surrounded by two silk borders, a thin green one, and a wide navy blue one with a golden fan design. The screen is protected by a black lacquered wooden frame with its original hardware.

Considering its age in a very good condition with traces of wear conform age and old restoration. Please have a close look at the photos for a clear condition reference.
