Byōbu folding screen - Gold leaf, Lacquered wood, Silk - Japan

An impressive, tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a painting on shiny gold leaf portraying a gathering of three cranes 鶴 (tsuru) perched on a rough rock at the edge of turbulent open water. \r
The waves crash against the rocks, while two cranes look far ahead over the water, while the third is tending to its feathers with its beak\r

In Japan, the crane, "tsuru" is one of the mystical or holy creatures and symbolizes good fortune and longevity because of its fabled lifespan of a thousand years. \r
\r
Signed 'Yûrintoku' 有斴悳 and sealed twice by the artist in the lower right corner. The first one reading 'Sealed by Minamoto Masatoku' 源正徳印. \r

Rendered in watercolour and ink on gold leaf. The screen is bordered by two brocade silk trims – a slender écru one and a broad black one, and is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with protective hardware with engraved scrolling foliage design and domed knobs engraved with blossoms. \r

Period: Japan - Taishô period (1912-1926) . \r
