Byōbu folding screen - Lacquer, Silk, Wood - Japan

A beautiful, tall two-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) showcases a refined painting of a pair of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) in flight above a grand pine tree 松 (matsu) .

Cranes and pine trees are a popular symbolic pair in Japan. In Japanese symbolism, it is said that cranes live to be a thousand years old, and serve as powerful symbols of youth and longevity in both literature and art. Pine trees also represent longevity, as well as good fortune and steadfastness.

Signed 'Image by Sei/Ao[. . .] at the age of 77' 七十七歳青[. .] 図 and sealed with a red 4-character name seal 'Kanae Kan[. . .] ' 金江渙[. . .] in the lower right corner.

The multicoloured painting is set on a shimmering golden silk backdrop with a faint square pattern.
The panels are mounted by two brocade silk borders, a thin ecru one and a broad navy blue one. Framed by black lacquered wood with gilded protective hardware.

Period: Japan – Taishô period/Early Shôwa period (Second quarter 20th century) .

Total width: 186. 6 cm (2 x 93. 3 cm) ; Height: 175. 2 cm.

It is in a good condition with traces of wear conform age and restorations. Please have a close look at the large restoration on the right panel. For a clear condition reference, please view the photos as well.

The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
