This exceptional and rare tall, two-panel Byōbu 屏風 (folding screen) , a prize-winner titled 'Chū' 宙 (literally 'air' or 'space') , showcases the vibrant Japanese art of senshoku 染織, a technique involving the dyeing and weaving of textiles.
The screen features a striking depiction of a large circle, the upper portion of which is filled with a lush bush adorned with white leaves, highlighted with neon pink, yellow, and blue accents. Look closely to discover a small dragonfly visiting this vibrant foliage. Below, a bed of rocks in shades of green forms the lower part of the circle. Set against a black backdrop, while above the sky is rendered in shiny gold leaf that exhibits a beautiful patina.
Framed by black lacquered wood.
The back side with a label: “Air, Hyogo Crafts and Arts, Writers' Association Exhibition, Grand prize winner” 宙 兵庫県工芸美術 作家協会展 大賞受賞.
Period: Japan – Late-Shôwa period (Late-20th century) .
