Byōbu folding screen - Paper, Lacquer, Wood, Gold leaf - Japan - Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century)
An elegant, tall 6-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) displays a Rinpa School-style 琳派 painting on lustrous golden silk, depicting a vibrant autumn flower garden.
Highlighted within the artwork is a maple tree adorned with vivid red and orange leaves of autumn, situated beside a lush bush of bright white hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô) . This floral display is further enriched by yellow asters 野菊 (nogiku) and clusters of narcissus 水仙 (suisen) .
The artwork predominantly unfolds in the lower section of the folding screen, generating the illusion of an expansive, luminous sky, instilling a serene ambiance.
Watercolour and ink on gold leaf covered silk with a nice aged patina.
Surrounded by two silk brocade borders, a thin dark brown one and wide dark blue one. Protected by a black lacquer frame with decorative hardware.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century) .
