Byzantine Leaded Bronze & Lead Scale Weights, 14 pcs

Ancient Near East, Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 11th century CE. A fine collection of 14 assorted lead and leaded-bronze weights for scale measurements and merchant use all with discoidal or cube shapes. They range in weight from 4.7 grams to 79.4 grams, based on the Roman pound units and some are incised with Greek script and denominational marks to denote the measure, and the quartered cross motif. Size (largest disc): 1.6" L x 0.375" W (4.1 cm x 1 cm): weight: 79.4 grams

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010

Condition Report: Age and use commensurate surface wear, nicks, and minor abrasions. Some softening and rubbing of incised details, but overall good condition with green patina on leaded-bronze weights.
