Byzantine Pottery Bowl w/ Sgraffito - Sea Find

[ translate ]

**Originally Listed At $400**

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A large, well preserved ceramic bowl with a decorated interior and a thickened rim. Two narrow bands of repeated triangular motifs encircle the interior body, with an interlocking abstract floral motif in tondo. Pretty creamy white glaze is still present over much of the interior surface. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. They used the technique called sgraffito, with the design incised through a white slip coating to reveal the red clay body beneath. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire, and have been found in numerous shipwrecks, especially in the Aegean Sea. Size: 10.3" W x 3.7" H (26.2 cm x 9.4 cm)

Provenance: The Dere Family Collection, New York, USA, assembled 1970s-2000s; ex-Richard Wagner Collection, Massachusetts, USA, acquired in 1970s

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.

A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.

We ship worldwide to most countries and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience.

#148363
Condition Report: Hairline fracture on rim, otherwise in excellent condition. Glaze has some fine craquelure. Light deposits on the surface - mainly on the exterior - are indicative of burial at sea.
