Byzantine Pottery Oil Lamp with Christogram

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. An iron-rich ceramic lamp with a round, disc-like body, two filler holes, a pointed handle, and an elongated, round-mouthed spout. In tondo is a Christogram, symbol of Christ, consisting of the Greek letters chi and rho. There is a cross-shaped workshop mark on the base. Size: 3.55" L x 5.25" W x 2.2" H (9 cm x 13.3 cm x 5.6 cm)
Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex-Uwe Dams, Germany, acquired between 1975 and 2000
