Byzantine Silver Cross Pendant w/ Glass Inlay

Ancient Near East, Byzantine Period, ca. 300 to 700 CE. A stunning silver pendant in the form of a cross, known as the Armenian cross, featuring a lovely, circular inlay of translucent, ice blue glass at its center. Each arm of the cross displays a flared end with trefoil embellishments extending from each corner. The front of the cross is adorned by abstract, geometric motifs of black niello and incised striations. An integral silver loop is attached to the top of the pendant for suspension. Size (of pendant): 3.125" L x 1.875" W (7.9 cm x 4.8 cm); Size (of modern strand): 22" L (55.9 cm); Silver quality: 91 to 94.5%; Weight: 12.2 grams

Byzantium was established when the fourth century Emperor Constantine, also known as Saint Constantine, Christianized the Roman Empire and proclaimed Constantinople in Byzantium as the capital. The visual culture of this era oftentimes demonstrates a synthesis of classical Greek, Roman, and Christian influences. This piece of course represents the impact of Christianity on the Byzantine Empire.

Condition Report: Wearable on a modern strand with a lobster claw clasp. Missing finial to upper left arm of cross. Some light bending, but form is still clear. Some softening of incised details. Otherwise, excellent with nice patina.
