Byzantine Silver Dove Amulet

Circa 9th century AD
This silver pendant is shaped like a stylized dove, with a compartment around the upper face that could have held inlays. The bird has a slender body, two legs, and wings folded along its corpus. Its small round head features a short beak and a large applied eye, while a small loop for suspension is located at the back.
In the Byzantine era, dove symbolism was prevalent, representing the Holy Spirit, peace, purity, and divine grace. Often depicted in religious art, doves conveyed messages of spiritual renewal and served as messengers of divine revelation. Their gentle nature reflected ideals of harmony and tranquillity.

Dimensions: 19mm x 13mm; weight 1g
Provenance: Private UK Ancient Art Collection formerly acquired on the UK, European, and USA Art Markets from pre-2000 Collections.
