Byzantine Silver Ring and Leaded Brass Token

[ translate ]

Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 10th century. Two remarkable items; a thick cast brass token and a 72% silver intaglio ring. The lovely coin features a recessed face with a raised perimeter and two incised lines along the periphery. One side of the token is encompassed in a crisscross border that encircles a cross pattee (a cross of equal flared arms that narrow at center) above an inscription of the Greek letters of gamma and alpha with a circle in between, while the reverse is blank with the light remains of an IX monogram (Christogram standing for Jesus Christ in Greek) or Chi Rho (Christogram standing for Christ, started by Constantine the Great). On the other hand, the gorgeous ring presents with an ovoid tondo exhibiting the portrait of a walking soldier in profile wearing a helmet and holding a lance and shield as a sword hangs from his belt. The circular body of the ring tapers as it reaches the other end where it is adorned with a petite embossed egg-shaped ornament. Two lovely relics from the Byzantine Empire! Size of Coin: 0.875"in diameter x 0.375" W (2.2 cm x 1 cm); Size of ring: US Size 8 / 0.875" in diameter (2.2 cm); Ring weight: 6.9 grams; Silver quality: 72% silver.
