Near East, Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 5th to 10th century CE. A beautiful stamped glass intaglio in hues of amber and caramel with an embossed border encircling the bust of a robed Madonna wearing a veil and holding baby Jesus, both adorned with haloes and flanked by two cross pattees (a cross of equal flared arms that narrow at the center). A lovely example from early Christianity! Size: 0.75" in diameter (1.9 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the late 1990s; ex-Kamias Antiques, Manila, Philippines
