Portrait of the shipowner Peder Hansen Sødring. Signed and dated Kratzenstein Stub pinx. 1812. Inscribed on the reverse of the painting (in Danish): "Our dear father was 31 years old when he sat for this portrait. He gave it to me in 1834 on my journey back. He was 61 at this time, which was 5 years before he died. F. Södring”. Oil on canvas. Oval. 71×55 cm.

The portrayed, Peder Hansen Sødring (c. 1778/79–1839), was a merchant and a shipowner in Aalborg, but had in the years 1808–12 amassed a large fortune from privateering. The inscription on the reverse of the canvas is by his son, the painter Frederik Sødring, (1809–1862). A similar inscription can be found on the reverse of Christen Købke's portrait of Sødring which is located in The Hirschsprung Collection.

Provenance: Gifted to the sitter's son, the painter Frederik Sødring, in 1834. Acquired by the consul general Johan Hansen (1861–1943) between 1918 and 1927; his auction, part VIII, Winkel & Magnussen auction 137, 31. maj 1933, no. 100; purchased here by Emil Simoni.
