"A Maine Homestead". Signed lower right "F.H. McKay". McKay was one of Amundsen's common pseudonyms.
Oil on canvas, 28" x 38". Unframed.
Hjalmar Amundsen, born in New York City, became a well-known painter of harbor scenes of the East Coast. He began painting in his early twenties and he became very involved in the artistic community. He was a founder of the Washington Square Outdoor Art Show, which featured artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, and he taught summer art classes en plein air.

Amundsen was also a commercial fisherman, which undoubtedly influenced his maritime pieces, some of which became cover art for the popular Motor Boating magazine.

Amundsen also worked under several pseudonyms, including J.J. Enwright, A. Emerson and William Ward.
