C. Lee Stamped American Classical Mahogany Half Tester Bed, 19th Century
19th-century American Classical mahogany half tester bed, stamped “C. Lee” on the components, retaining its original finials, carved crown/crest, and original tester brackets. The bed features tall turned rear posts supporting a serpentine half tester canopy with bead molding and carved scrolled crest, above a shaped headboard with shell carving, scrollwork, pendant foliate ornament, and recessed molded panel. The footboard is similarly shaped with bold turned posts, carved central ornament, and sweeping side rails, giving the bed strong architectural presence. The bed was lowered at some point and fitted with larger non-original brackets, but has since been returned to its proper height using the pieces: original post tops and brackets, which were retained. The later larger brackets accompany the bed should the buyer prefer that configuration. 120 in. H x 65 1/2 in. W x 77 in. D.
Condition: Presents well overall with expected age and use wear. Original tester fabric/lining is worn, sagging, and would benefit from replacement or restoration. Scattered veneer loss, lifting, chips, abrasions, finish wear, age cracks, and minor losses throughout. Evidence of prior alteration/lowering as noted; now returned to correct height using original brackets. Later larger brackets included. See photographs.
