[CAÇA] MAPA DO REAL DISTRETTO DI CACCIA DI STUPINIGI. SCALE: 1 to 18,750. Original drawing in India ink and coloured gouache. Circa 1900.
Dim: 38 x 62.5 cm. Fold-out map in concertina form whose back is in cream linen. Map with 8 plans carefully painted in 4 colours representing the hunting reserves. The Ordine Mauriziano (OSSML) held most of the reserve, in olive green, the colour of the Order in question.
The Palazzina di Caccia di Stupinigi, designed by Filippo Juvarra from 1729 onwards, was conceived as the centre of a vast hunting district (the Real Distretto di Caccia di Stupinigi) for the House of Savoy, located to the southwest of Turin, in Nichelino.
The district was a forest and agricultural area managed with the aim of serving hunting (venatorial) activities and festivities of the nobility. The territory is now protected as part of the Parco Naturale di Stupinigi.
In 1997, the Palazzina and its hunting setting were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Residences of the House of Savoy.
The complex, including the historical hunting areas, is owned by the Fondazione Ordine Mauriziano, which has no connection with the OSSML (Ordem dos Ss Mauricio e Lázaro, of the Royal House of Savoy, whose legitimate heir Grand Master is H.R.H. Principe Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, grandson of the last King of Italy).
The map has a lilac stamp on the back, of King Vittorio Emanuel III of Italy, which proves its royal origin.
COLLECTOR'S PIECE.
