CANADA. Dominion of Canada. 1 Dollar, 1878. DC-8f. PMG About Uncirculated 55.

Payable at Toronto. Signature of T.D. Harington at right. With "1" numerals in each corner on the obverse. Oversized "1" counters make up the left and right ends in dark black ink. Dark green "1" underprints are noticed at left and right of the central portrait vignette. The reverse of the note displays the Seal of Queen Victoria at center with the payable branch below. At left and right ends are counters encased within ornate guilloches. Dark forest green ink comprises the back design. This note is currently Top Pop at PMG for the variety, and is sure to generate quite a buzz among Canadian Paper Money collectors. PMG Pop 1/None Finer.

Hariot Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, Marchioness of Dufferin and Ava is depicted at center. Lady Dufferin is best remembered today for improving medical care for women in British India. Lady Dufferins' husband was the Governor General of Canada starting in 1872. Lord & Lady Dufferin were very influential during their time in Canada, being very popular with the local populace (particularly for visiting Manitoba, the first Governor General to do so); and the couple even drove spikes in the new line for the Canadian Pacific Railway. Hariot later referred to her time in Canada as the happiest period of her life.
