CANE WITH WHALE IVORY HANDLE CARVED AS A SAILOR'S HEAD Mid-19th Century

Sailor wearing a wide-brimmed hat and shirt collar. Engraved hair, eyebrows and eyes. Collar comprised of bone and ebony spacers. Wooden shaft with whale ivory tip. Length 36.5".

Two canes with similar sailor head handles are illustrated in Graven by the Fishermen Themselves by Richard Malley, p. 91.

Condition: Age lines in sailor head. One ebony spacer with age crack. Shaft with two divots two cracks reinforced with screws.
