Carl-Gustaf Vilhelm “Nalle” Hiort af Ornäs (27 February 1911 - 7 November 1996) was a prominent Finland-Swedish interior designer and furniture designer who during his career made significant contributions to Nordic design history. Born in Finland, he belonged to an aristocratic family and became known for his nickname “Winnie”. Although he did not complete his architecture studies at the Helsinki University of Technology, Hiort af Ornäs quickly became known as a pioneering furniture designer and interior designer.

During the 1930s Hiort af Ornäs worked as a technical director at a furniture factory in Pori. Although he did not formally complete his education, during this time he developed a deep understanding of furniture construction and design. In 1945, together with his brother, he founded his own furniture manufacturing company, Puunveisto Oy, in Helsinki. This company became the hub for Hiort af Ornäs creative workshop and a platform for his pioneering design ideas.

Hiort af Ornäs became known for his ability to bend veneer in three dimensions, resulting in creations of versatile and ergonomic furniture shapes, especially chairs. His furniture is characterized by distinctive and original design elements, which made them iconic representatives of the Nordic design.

During the 1950s and 1960s Hiort af Ornäs participated in several international exhibitions and fairs, including the Milan Triennale, where his work was acclaimed and noted. His creations received recognition for their elegant simplicity, high quality and refined finishes.

After retiring in the 1990s, Hiort af Ornäs settled in Spain, where he continued to design and work on several architectural projects. He died in 1996, but his legacy lives on through his timeless furniture creations and his significant contribution to Nordic design history.
