LOT 159

CARLO FRANCESCO NUVOLONE | HEAD OF A WOMAN LOOKING DOWN, BUST LENGTH

[ translate ]

Property from the Collection of Stan Battat
CARLO FRANCESCO NUVOLONE
Milan 1609 - 1662
HEAD OF A WOMAN LOOKING DOWN, BUST LENGTH

inscribed on the reverse: Panfilo Vechio
oil on panel
12½ by 10⅞ in.; 31.7 by 27.6 cm.

Condition Report:
The panel consists of a single plank and is slightly convex on the left side (from obverse) and is stable. A portrait image reads well with some accretions in the varnish, mostly along the bottom edge, but these are not distracting. Under UV inspection, a vertical repair to a crack runs from the top edge to the forehead, about 3 inches long. Retouching is visible in small strokes throughout, especially in the shadows and background, but these mostly follow the wood grain and are not distracting to the naked eye. The painting can hang in its present state. Offered in a decoratively painted and carved red and giltwood frame.

In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
