Born in southern California, Carrita "Carrie" Smith has spent most of her career in Washington, D.C. In a 1983 article for the Washington Post, Anne Behrens described Smith's paintings as "bright, colorful and innovative." Smith has exhibited her work at The Academy of the Arts exhibition (Easton, MD) and the Allied Artists of America Annual Exhibition (New York, NY), among others.
