Fredericks, Broadway, New York. Carte image presents excellent tones with some bumping at corners of carte. Charles Pomeroy Stone (1824-1887) United States Army officer, civil engineer, and surveyor. He fought in the Mexican?American War, earning two brevet promotions. Stone was a brigadier general at the Battle of Ball's Bluff in October 1861 and was blamed for the Union defeat and death of political/military leader U.S. Senator Edward D. Baker which resulted in his arrest and imprisonment for almost six months without trial or charges. He resigned shortly after later becoming a general in the Egyptian Army after the Civil War. He would return to the United States and oversaw the construction of the base of the Statue of Liberty.
