CESAR (1921–1998) “Enveloppage” 1971 Old coffee grinder (wood, metal, and paper) encased in thermoformed Plexiglas Trace of a signature (paper partially torn), located in Nice and dated 4/13/71 45 x 39 x 25 cm Provenance: Gifted by the artist to the owner The “Enveloppages” series—little-known works of an experimental nature—follows the “Transparent Compressions” of the 1970s. In the “Enveloppages,” César employs this process by inserting objects into the pieces. A typewriter, a telephone, a pair of shoes, a coffee grinder, tools, a fan, All these vintage objects—drawn from everyday life or the flea markets the artist enjoys frequenting—appear, like relics, encased in one or more sheets of plastic. They are small in size and of great quality (torn paper, yellowed Plexiglas, signs of age) Decorative. The depth of the folds and creases in the sheet of Plexiglas magnifies their presence. For quite some time, César regarded this type of work as “experiments or sometimes even as mere attempts at paths [he] had not taken,” but today they have found their rightful place.
