CHARLES MARVILLE
1816-1879
'RUE DES PÈLERINS, DE LA RUE DU CLOÎTRE ST. JACQUES'

albumen print, on a two-toned mount, embossed with the photographer's credit 'Ch Marville Photographe Du Musée Impérial Du Louvre' and with title in pencil on the mount, framed, circa 1866
image: 13⅝ by 10⅝ in. (34.6 by 27 cm.)
framed: 26½ by 22½ in. (67.3 by 57.2 cm.)

Condition Report:
Grading this albumen print on a scale of 1 to 10 - 10 being an albumen print that has deep brown, dark tones and highlights that retain all of their original detail - this print rates a strong 8. It has rich, dark eggplant tones and bright creamy highlights. There is minimal fading and yellowing at the periphery. The print delivers an exceptional level of detail, including the legible signage in the background, the damp cobblestone paving, and the weaving of the basket to the right.

When examined closely in raking light, the following are visible: a 7-inch vertical linear crease running from the upper edge to near the center of the print, which does not break the emulsion and likely occurred during the mounting process; scattered foxing; faint silvering at the periphery; a matte deposit in the lower left quadrant; and scattered deposits of original retouching.

The mount measures 23 1/2 by 16 1/4 in. (59.7 by 41.3 cm.). It is age-darkened at the periphery. There is an abrasion along the left side of the mount, and foxing on the front and reverse of the mount. '5000' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil in the lower left corner.

On the reverse is an abrasion along the right side. '800.8' is written in an unidentified hand in pencil.

This photograph was conserved in 2001. A treatment report is available from the Photographs Department upon request.

Provenance:
