CHEN BANDING (1877-1970), ATTRIBUTED TO, CHINESE PAINTING OF SUNNY GREEN MOUNTAIN TEMPLE

[ translate ]

A Chinese painting attributed to Chen Banding (1877-1970), sunny green mountain temple. This lightly colored landscape depicts a forest of jagged peaks and steep precipices. Waterfalls cascade down from mountain summits, while mist swirls amid the valleys. In the foreground stand rugged gnarled ancient pines beside rushing mountain brooks. Several erudite scholars sit on the cliffside ground to discuss Daoist principles, and another visitor with a walking cane approaches the gathering slowly. Buildings nestle on a flat clearing halfway up the mountain, concealed among trees.
Ink and color on paper, hanging scroll.
Image: 100 x 34 cm.

Note: The work bears an inscription to Gustav Ecke and an inscription in the name of Chen Banding, with seal marks. The inscription is dated Bingzi (1936).

Provenance: By repute, from an important private collection.

Gustav Ecke (1896-1971) was a German art historian and scholar of Chinese art. He joined Amoy University in 1923, later taught at Qinghua University and Fujen University in Beijing, and was associated with the National Institute of Architecture. He was a pioneering scholar of Chinese hardwood furniture and published Chinese Domestic Furniture in 1944. In 1945 he married artist and scholar Tseng Yu-Ho (Zeng Youhe). The couple moved to Hawaii in 1949, where Ecke served as curator of Chinese art at the Honolulu Academy of Arts and as professor of Asian art at the University of Hawaii from 1950 to 1966.
