Ca. 1368-1644 AD. Chinese Ming Dynasty Attendant Figure. An elaborately crafted male attendant figure dressed in a grey robe with vibrant yellow and green trimmings. The attendant sports a yellow domed hat and holds either a doll or a human child in front of him. Attendant figures such as this item were important to a variety of cultures with afterlife beliefs which involved trials, travels, or an afterlife similar to that which was lived on earth. These figures were considered to be able to watch over their owners, providing them with protection. Popular choices included warriors, dancers, male and female figures, and animals. Good condition.Size: L:200mm / W:73mm ; 435g. Provenance: From the private collection of an Oxford gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed in before 2000 on the UK / International art markets.
