CHINESE EXPORT 'LA DAME AU PARASOL' DISH AFTER A WATERCOLOR BY CORNELIS PRONK
painted in the Imari palette, with a design of a lady with her attendant holding an umbrella over her head, by water's edge, and watching three water fowl, all within a thin floral band, the rims with alternating figural and water fowl cartouches reserved on a patterned ground, gilt rims and highlights, the reverse with a band of underglaze blue spaced insects

Provenance: The Rijksmuseum Collection includes a watercolor with a similar design produced by Pronk in 1734-36, RP-T-1967-18. "The Lady with a Parasol" was the first of Pronk's four designs and was also ordered in Imari, famille rose and later from Japanese kilns. Chinese ceramicists soon copied the pattern for private sale in Canton. For additional details and an illustration of a similar blue and white plate with border panels see David S. Howard, 'The Choice of the Private Trader', p. 73, pl. 53.

An Imari example of this pattern is illustrated in William R. Sargent, 'Treasures of Chinese Export Ceramics' from the Peabody Essex Museum, p. 277, pl. 143. See also ;Pronk Porcelain: Porcelain after designs by Cornelis Pronk' Exhibition Catalogue, Groninger Museum April-June 1980 C.P.A. Jorg, nos. 32 and 35.

Jorge Welsh and Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos included illustrations of two plates in 'The RA Collection of Chinese Ceramics – A Collector's Vision', T.II, no. 286-287, pp. 170-171." La Dame au Parasol" was one of several designs commissioned from Cornelis Pronk by the Dutch East India Company between 1734 and 1737.

Pronk's designs were made in both the famille rose palette and Imari. The Japanese also produced sample plates decorated with "La Dame au Parasol" in famille rose and Arita blue and white for Dutch clients (or other private individuals). The entirety of Cornelis Pronk's design and the way in which they were ordered and received by the Hoge Regering at the VOC base in Batavia is discussed in 'C.P.A. Jorg, Pronk Porcelain', pp. 51 and 99 -102. According to Soame Jenyns, two of the birds represented are the ruff and the spoonbill, which are both native to Holland. Dimensions: Diameter: 9 in. (22.9 cm.)

Condition: Crack to reverse but does not go through.
