CHINESE EXPORT TRUNK ON STAND, HISTORIC ASSOCIATION
Early 19th c. Leather (likely pigskin) Wrapped and Brass Bound Camphorwood Sailor's Chest in blue paint with brass tack decoration and owner's plate engraved "F. Mallaby", inscribed inside lid "Townsend Harris", along with a stand that was probably made not long after the chest was obtained. 28" x 38" x 19 1/2" overall. Francis Mallaby (1790-1887), served as Commander of the armed merchant schooners 'Conquest', 'Sylph' and 'Raven', brig 'Jones' out of Sackets Harbor under Commodore Isaac Chauncey during the War of 1812. Townsend Harris (1804-1878), was the first US Consul to Japan, arriving with Commodore Perry in 1855, appointed by President Franklin Pierce. The rare Japanese Okiyo-e prints inside the lid depict Perry's first arrival in 1852.
