Chinese jade vase with lid, Buddha Gautama, 19th century, China.
Theme: The theme of this sculpture depicts Gautama Buddha sitting in a Buddhist shrine and folding his palms together.
The gesture has a double symbolism. On the one hand, in India, the right hand is the clean one and the left is the dirty one, so that putting the differences together suggests an end to the differences. On the other hand, in Buddhism, the right hand stands for Buddha himself and the left hand stands for all living beings. The Buddha is accompanied by monks on both sides. The whole sculpture is decorated with magpies and flowers. These are patterns with auspicious meaning. The vase may have been used to store important Buddhist relics.
