CHINESE MING DYNASTY GLAZED TERRACOTTA ZODIAC FIGURE (PIG)

[ translate ]

Ca. 1368-1644 AD or later . A striking anthropomorphic zodiac figure that depicts the head of a pig on a standing figure. The figure is hollow-moulded and features both hands folded on the chest in a respectful and traditional gesture. The vibrant, multicoloured robe worn by the figure is long and voluminous, with green glazed edges that lend a sense of elegance and sophistication to the piece. The head of the pig is expertly crafted, with a pronounced snout, nostrils, large eyes, green glazed ears, and a slightly parted mouth that gives the figure a sense of liveliness and personality. In Chinese culture, the zodiac is a system of astrology that assigns an animal to each year in a repeating twelve-year cycle. The pig is the twelfth and final animal in the Chinese zodiac, representing generosity, kindness, and good fortune. Those born in the year of the pig are said to be honest, sincere, and hardworking, with a love of life and a positive outlook. Size: L:210mm / W:83mm ; 440g Provenance: From the private collection of a Somerset gentleman; previously in an old British collection, formed before 2000 on the UK /European art markets.
