CHINESE MING DYNASTY STONE BUDDHA HEAD WITH HALO

Ca. AD 1368 - 1644.
A greyish-brown stone head of Buddha in high relief with a three-banded halo. The figure is depicted with an elaborate high topknot (Ushnisha), followed by abstract stylised facial features including high eyebrows, thick-lidded closed eyes, an aquiline nose, prominently curved lips, a small chin and characteristically large pendular ears. His shoulders, only partly preserved, are dressed in heavy robes. The figure’s head is flanked by two rows of stylised seated figures. The seated posture refers to the moment just before Buddha enters enlightenment. Mounted on a custom-made stand.
