The Great Cultural Revolution of the Proletariat (Mandarin: wuchanjieji wenhuadageming), often abbreviated as the Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical revolutionary movement which took place in the People's Republic of China from 1966 to 1976. The revolution was set in motion by Mao Zedong the then Chairman of the Communist Party of China to eliminate his opponents. Mao Zedong regained his position of absolute power. Mao had lost that position as a result of the failure of the 'Great leap forward' (1958-1966), which led to massive famines and cost tens of millions of human lives.
