The Great Cultural Revolution of the Proletariat (Mandarin: wuchanjieji wenhuadageming), often abbreviated as the Cultural Revolution, was a sociopolitical revolutionary movement which took place in the People's Republic of China from 1966 to 1976. The revolution was set in motion by Mao Zedong - the then Chairman of the Communist Party of China - to eliminate his opponents. Mao Zedong regained his position of absolute power. Mao had lost that position as a result of the failure of the 'Great leap forward' (1958-1966), which led to massive famines and cost tens of millions of human lives.
