CHINESE SCHOOL, VIEW OF THE DUTCH FOLLY FORT ON THE PEARL RIVER, NEAR CANTON, 19TH CENTURY
oil on canvas, depicting a passenger boat and smaller craft with the fort in the background, gilt-wood frame, 44 x 58.5cm (59 x 74cm framed) Provenance: MacConnal-Mason Fine Paintings, London Footnote: A folly fort is a specific type of fort built in shallow water, near the shore, exclusively for military defence. While the defensive island structures themselves date back to the Ming dynasty, it gained the moniker "Dutch Folly Fort" after being occupied or utilized by Dutch traders starting in the 17th century during the early era of European trade expansion. It sat on a sandbar/island in the Pearl River, roughly 800 meters east of the foreign factories (hongs), and was later heavily utilized by Western forces during the Second Opium War before the land was ultimately reclaimed. 十九世纪 中国画家作《广州珠江海珠炮台风景》布面油画一幅oil on canvas, depicting a passenger boat and smaller craft with the fort in the background, gilt-wood frame, 44 x 58.5cm (59 x 74cm framed) Provenance: MacConnal-Mason Fine Paintings, London Footnote: A folly fort is a specific type of fort built in shallow water, near the shore, exclusively for military defence.
