CIRCA 550-950 MAYA JAINA-STYLE EARTHENWARE FIGURE

a finely modeled hollow earthenware figure of a priest with aquiline nose, scarification to his left cheek, wearing a tall headdress formed as the god Itzamna, seated cross-legged, the right hand positioned close to slightly parted lips, the left palm pointing outward from the chest, with bright terracotta-hued slip overall; height: 43.5 cm (17 1/8 in.)

Private collection, New York, acquired at the above. (Copy of invoice available upon request)

CONDITION
In age-appropriate fragile condition, with losses primarily to the verso, the largest 10.5 cm (4 1/8 in.) long. The neck has been restored. Scattered and shallow surface chips. Loss to the left thumb. Drill holes to the back and the upper arms. Stable cracking visible to the underside and the interior. Inspection under UV light shows overpainting to the neck and right hip, and glue residue to the lower edge of the headdress.
