Description

Circle of/early follower of Pieter Claesz (1596/98-1660/61), still life with wine glass, ham and various fruits, 1649 or second half of 17th century, oil on panel, dated '1649' in the blade of the knife, on reverse with the old label of the art dealer Bernhard Houthakker (in use between 1921 and 1926), ca. 51 x 81 cm, with frame approx. 76 x 106 cm

Provenance: Hamburg private collection

The Flemish-Dutch still life painter Pieter Claesz is one of the most important artists of his genre. All components of the motif, wine glass, ham, bread, knife, fruit, etc. can be traced back to Claesz's work, but there is no direct evidence of direct copy. It is therefore highly likely a work from the artist's circle or early follower, which was either created in accordance with the date in 1649 or was painted shortly afterwards in the second half of the 17th century.
Pieter Claesz completed his apprenticeship in Antwerp and later settled in Haarlem. His subject of the set table was so successful even during his lifetime that no other painter can verify as many paintings in the Haarlem estate inventories of the 17th century as by Pieter Claesz.

We thank Ms. Sabine van Beek (Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Dokumentatie, The Hague) for her scientific assistance in cataloguing this painting.
The painting was added to the database of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, The Hague under no. 311515.Show more
