CIRCLE OF GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM (MO/KS, 1811-1879)

Incredibly Beautiful Young Woman, life-sized waist length portrait, oil on panel, unsigned, with a Cleveland Art Museum inventory label verso, circa 1835, she is depicted with her wavy auburn hair pinned up on the sides, her expressive soft brown eyes fixed on the viewer, dressed in an off the shoulder russet silk gown with mutton chop sleeves, her right hand with garnet and pearl gold ring holding the ribbon going around her neck, looping the gold framed commemorative miniature portrait pendant tucked into her high-waisted belt, housed in the original lemon gold mitered frame, OS: 37" x 32", SS: 29" x 23 1/2". Fine condition, a few touchups to the frame.Bingham was born in Virginia but moved to Missouri at age 8, was self-taught other than a few years at PAFA in his early 20s. He was known for his views of the Mississippi River and frontier life, but made his early living doing portraits in St. Louis. Provenance: Found in Ohio. From a Private Collection.
