CIRCLE OF JAN ALBERTSZ. ROTIUS
Portrait of a girl, full-length, holding cherries, a bowl of fruit on a table beside her

oil on canvas
105 by 77.5cm.; 41¼by 30 1/2in.

Condition Report:
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is dirty and the varnish is very discoloured. Retouching along all four margins is visible to the naked eye, as is some bitumenisation in the dark barkground, notably in the upper right corner. There are small restorations in the upper left corner. Further small, discoloured retouchings are visible to the naked eye in the girl's face, scattered in her collar, in her white apron, and the white tablecloth. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old, milky varnish beneath which it is difficult to discern any intervention further to that visible to the naked eye.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."

Provenance:
R.G. Berkeley, Esq., by 1934.
