CIRCLE OF ROBERT PEAKE
Portrait of a girl, half-length, in a lace cap and ruff

inscribed upper left: ...6 ÆT, SVÆ 5:
oil on panel, reduced
40.1 by 28.5cm.; 15¾by 11 1/4in.

Condition Report:
The panel is formed of a single, uncradled plank which is slightly bowed. The paint surface is dirty and the varnish is discoloured. Small, discoloured retouchings are visible scattered throughout the sitter's face and chest, as well as in the background, notably in the centre of the left margin to two restored damages the larger of which measures 1 x 3 cm. Inspection under ultraviolet light is impeded by the old, milky varnish but confirms the aforementioned retouchings and appears to reveal little other intervention. The panel is in overall fairly good condition notwithstanding the surface dirt and historic restoration.

"In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective, qualified opinion. Prospective buyers should also refer to any Important Notices regarding this sale, which are printed in the Sale Catalogue.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF BUSINESS PRINTED IN THE SALE CATALOGUE."
