Albany is the oldest city in the state of New York and still its capital. It is located 136 miles north of New York City. The area was first settled by Dutch colonists in the early 17th century and named Fort Nassau. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements and renamed the city Albany in honor of the Duke of Albany, the future English King James II. From the late 18th century onwards, the city became a center of trade and transportation, located alongside the Hudson River. It was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal and home to some of the earliest American railroads. Extremely rare and early city bond.
