[ translate ]

Full length hand-colored and gilt studio tintype portrait. Half leatherette case. Modern identification made to plate verso and included note.

Identified as Private Henry W. Bailey, Co. L, 1st Maine Cavalry (1839-1911). Bailey enlisted with the 1st Maine Cavalry on 29 August 1862 and served with the regiment during a remarkably busy and hard fought period, joining Pope's Campaign in Northern Virginia. He returned home when he was discharged on 10 March 1863 for disability.

The 1st Maine Cavalry was a heavily engaged unit that saw over 40 battles, including Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Over the course of its long and active service, the regiment lost over 500 of its men. Material relating to the 1st Maine Cavalry is highly prized.

Bailey casts a dignified pose, wearing his cavalry gloves grasping his saber. His hat with his designation is highlighted in hand gilding. He stands before an elaborate camp backdrop featuring a palm or palmetto tree.
